Our Story
For centuries along the ancient Silk Road, the chapan was far more than a garment. It was a mantle of honor, warmth, and identity—a piece of living art given to guests, worn by leaders, and passed down through generations across the mountains and valleys of Central Asia.
CHAPANSAR was born from a desire to honor this legacy. We breathe new life into the traditional Kyrgyz chapan, transforming an ancient silhouette into a contemporary masterpiece of ethical luxury. Every piece we create bridges nomadic heritage with modern elegance, inviting you to wear a story that endures.
OUR FOUNDER & LEADERSHIP
CHAPANSAR is a 100% women-led atelier founded by Zhumagul Sarieva.
Driven by a profound devotion to Kyrgyz culture and textile arts, Zhumagul founded CHAPANSAR not only as a fashion house, but as a center for cultural preservation. Through mentorship, educational initiatives, and creative entrepreneurship, she actively empowers women artisans and passes down rare, ancestral techniques to the next generation.
THE MASTERY OF SLOW CRAFT
Every CHAPANSAR garment is created slowly, deliberately, and with reverence for raw materials.
Handcrafted Precision: Working with rich velvets, natural silks, and dense wools, our master artisans spend weeks hand-stitching, quilting, and tailoring a single coat.
The Art of Kurak: Rooted in our nomadic zero-waste philosophy, fabric scraps are never discarded. Through Kurak—the traditional Kyrgyz art of geometric patchwork—they are repurposed into handcrafted headwear, slippers, and accessories.
LIVING ARCHAELOGY
History is our design studio. In collaboration with archaeologists and historians, we painstakingly recreate authentic 12th–13th century garments from physical excavation findings (such as our work with the Bashat project), keeping forgotten heritage alive.
A CULTURAL LEGACY
Our work extends far beyond the studio walls. CHAPANSAR is deeply woven into the cultural identity of Kyrgyzstan:
Honoring the Manaschi: We handcraft bespoke chapans each year for the epic storytellers who keep the UNESCO-recognized oral tradition of Manas alive.
Cinematic History: Our studio designed and crafted the authentic historical costumes for the cinematic masterpiece Kurmanjan Datka, bringing the visual history of our nation to international screens.
Global Representation: We were honored to design the official ceremonial uniforms for the National Team of Kyrgyzstan at the II World Nomad Games, presenting our national cultural code to the world.
